I've got Linux Mint set up for a few years now. I moved from Windows 10 to Linux Mint recently and have been playing games on my new PC. My Valve Index worked perfectly at first, but after a few weeks I stopped gaming and now can't launch any games. I only changed things by running sudo apt update and upgrade. My 3090 has proper drivers installed, but I think an update might have caused the problem. I'm not sure where to start. Most games fail to launch because Direct X11 isn't installed or functioning correctly. I'm trying to get back into gaming quickly for my summer vacation and also want to explore options on my desktop. I've also had issues with Fallout 4 on Steam Deck, which made me consider playing on my desktop instead. I'm hoping someone can help me figure this out, especially for the desktop and VR. If needed, I can boot up something simple on Steam Deck. Thanks in advance for any advice!

I believe Steam is the platform you're using to play games. To check if that resolves issues, add the line `PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1` to your launch settings in the game. If it doesn't help, reinstall Steam completely and then enable Proton again through Settings → Compatibility → Run other titles with... This should reinstall Proton fully and likely fix the DX11 errors.

I included that line in my launch settings, which helped move the ball forward slightly. Prior to adding it, I saw the splash screen with options like play, settings, or exit. When I clicked play, the app would freeze and take me back to Steam. After making that change, I could play on the splash screen and actually start the game this time. I notice the black-and-white "Please Stand By" intro in Fallout 4, and I reach the game menu to select new or load. I go back to the same game and press confirm, but it brings me back to Steam once more. The odd part is this mirrors the Steam Deck experience—loading a saved game closes it. I’m wondering if switching to new might resolve the issue, maybe my saved file is damaged?

Interestingly, I managed to begin a fresh game! I left the character setup to pause here, but it seems to be functioning. I’ll share more updates soon. Appreciate your support!

My story keeps going. I switched to another title, but adding that line didn’t help in Ark: Survival Evolved. When I press the green Play button on Steam, it changes color and shows launch options. I’ve tried Play Ark: Survival Evolved, Play ARK: No BattlEye AntiCheat, Unofficial Servers Only, and Reset Game Resolution. All three options send me back to Steam and the game page now has a green Play button again. No matter what happens, getting Fallout 4 back online for my son is a huge win for me.

This might be related to the specific game, so see if other titles are affected too.
