I'm working through this guide to set up a backup from my Mac Mini to my NAS running Windows. The issue is that whenever I attempt to generate the image on the NAS from the Mac, it consistently times out with error 60. It appears the process is taking too long and the Mac simply stops after the timeout. I've tried speeding up the transfer by connecting both Ethernet ports to the same mesh router in my home, but that didn't resolve the problem. My NAS drives are quite fast—two brand new Seagate Exos X16 10TB in RAID 1—and they seem to function normally when I try creating the image, as they reach about 95% usage in Task Manager. However, when I attempt a smaller file like 50MB, it works without issues. Any advice would be appreciated. I'm not very comfortable with Mac OS since my main system is Windows 10, and the Mac is owned by my dad. They're on the same network, of course.

Which file protocol do you use when connecting to your NAS? I’m using TM and have no major problems, but I’m linked via AFP. This could point to a Samba issue; since you’re on Windows, it seems SMB might be the better choice. Have you enabled automatic mounting for any network drives on your NAS, especially the one you use for TM? If not, mount it manually first before starting the backup. Also, are your login details sufficient for the user you’re trying to connect with? You might need to adjust permissions, assuming you’re not attempting admin access.

Thank you for the update. -I'm using SMB. -I haven't enabled automatic mounting of network drives yet, as I'm still in the initial setup phase. I'm using Disk Utility on my Mac to generate a 300GB blank sparse bundle image on the NAS for TM to back up. The process is timing out during the creation of this empty image. -Yes, I'm accessing with an admin account. Appreciate the clarification.

I didn't use diskutility on MacOS for any tasks with my NAS. I set up a separate partition on the NAS, including diskutility files there, then mounted it and selected it via Time Machine for backups. EDIT:// The partition I made is identical to the others on my NAS, just named differently.

It’s likely to work well using rsync instead of the time machine method. You can also monitor the progress with rsync to identify issues early. You might want to eliminate samba and switch to Nextcloud, as samba has consistently shown security weaknesses.
