I enjoy capturing games extensively, but most people do it for public sharing rather than personal use. I focus on my PS3/4 and already own an Elgato capture HD setup. However, I miss the 5.1 sound quality. Some titles work perfectly in stereo, but the full experience fades when watching in 5.1 mode. I’m searching for a solution to record 5.1 audio from my console, since I already record PC games with Frapper. I’ve tried numerous options but haven’t found the right equipment. A few devices support 5.1, yet capturing it from my PS3 requires an optical connection. Right now I’m using a DVI to HDMI cable with a box that handles stereo audio via an analog cable from the console. This removes HDCP, improving video clarity. The only optical 5.1 option I found is the Hauppauge HD PVR2 gaming edition plus, but its 13Mbit stream feels limited. I’ve spent a lot of time looking but still can’t locate the ideal hardware. I’m hoping someone here has better suggestions—1080p30 is acceptable, but a 5.1 version at 1080p60 would be ideal. Cost isn’t a big concern, but I need a single device, regardless of interface (USB2.0, USB3.0, PCIe). P.S. I’m not sure if this fits within the PC gaming discussion, so if it’s not meant for that audience, please consider moving it.

This section is about PC games, probably for PS3 or PS4. Maybe that’s why nobody has responded about the capture card—have you checked out the average capture card? I believe it works well for its purpose, though it probably won’t capture 5.1 audio. If you’re saving your game recordings for others to watch, keep in mind not everyone has a 5.1 audio setup at home.

There are actually 77 views. You're not doing anything incorrect; the forum tools can be quirky at times. I can't track my thread views until they're live. Regarding your question, it seems you've already explored 5.1 and recording options. As you likely noticed, there are very few choices for 5.1 recording. Most users record for sharing with others who typically have 2 or 2.1 configurations. Even when compatible setups are found, they often end up as 2.1 recordings. I don't have much hands-on experience with capture cards anymore—I rely on software now. I think OBS can handle it with a plugin, but I haven't found one easily. I also believe DxTory supports 5.1 recording. For hardware, it's unlikely any consumer devices natively record 5.1, so you might want to consider options like Intensity Pro or BlackMagic DeckLink. These can become quite expensive soon.

I don't really need it for PC games. I mentioned using Fraps, which handles 5.1 audio perfectly. Occasionally I record TV shows from my STB, so it's not just for console games. It would be great if I could capture 5.1 from those too... I also said I mostly record for myself, not others. It's a bit strange, but I know it's unusual. I checked Blackmagic products, but Intensity Pro only supports stereo, so that's out. I didn't find Decklink options either—the Mini Recorder needs an optical input, which it doesn't have. I also looked into soundcards with optical inputs, but none fit my needs. I tried searching for cards that could record audio and send it to video later via muxing, but nothing came up. Well, if I can't find anything, I'll go with the GE Plus from Hauppage. I read somewhere about connecting both devices—GE Plus and GameCapture HD—and using them together to get video and audio from different sources. That might work then.
