For many years I have used Audacity with Windows 10 to record from tapes and other sources. Suddenly, it stopped working so that I can no longer take in audio even though I still can play mp3 files. The strange thing is that when I use Zoom or Skype, I seem able to put sound into the PC. I tried putting an audio tape from a cassette recorder into the computer but had no luck. I am using version 2.3.0 of Audacity and running 64-bit Windows 10 . However, it probably doesn't matter since I have been using Windows 10 all the time ! Could it be that when I sometimes got invited to upgrade my Windows while I was logging off, that has caused this problem? I have tried putting a sound signal into all the available inputs of the PC which, by the way, uses a Gigabyte MB?

You have an old version of Audacity installed (it's 3.0.2 right now). Updating to the newest one is easy and might help you out. First, take out your current version by uninstalling it. Then, download and install the latest build from this link: https://www.audacityteam.org/

Audacity is running on an old version (3.0.2) which is way too outdated. It's worth trying to remove it and put in the newest one right now. You can get started by uninstalling Audacity and then installing the latest version here: https://www.audacityteam.org/

Thanks for the idea. I went ahead and cleaned up an old install of Audacity 3.0.2, but it still acts up. Last time I had Lame installed too, so I skipped that step this round because I didn't think it was needed. Any other guesses are welcome to me. I also tried connecting my phone's audio out port, but that doesn't work either. Thanks anyway

I figured out how to fix Audacity. You were right about this time, so I took a closer look at everything. Finally, I changed one setting to Line In RealTek Audio. That worked perfectly! It reminds me of an old saying: "When all else fails, read the instructions." Thanks so much for guiding me in the right way.

Some free software comes as a portable app on portableapps.com. I know this program is also included there. You have already fixed your specific problem, so here is some general advice. If other software that doesn't work is available at the same place, try it too. Even if it's the exact same program and version number, all the settings are in the same folder structure as the portableapp software and won't mess with what you installed through the operating system. In this case, there was an incorrect input channel setting that I assume must have been changed by you pressing keys while using it. If you downloaded the portable app version of Audacity, you would most likely find it worked, but the regular installed version didn't - because the settings weren't altered in the portable version (unless, of course, you change them as your very first thing after opening the program and you probably wouldn't do that just for testing).
