It looks like the search bar was unintentionally turned off. You might want to enable it instead of disabling it, as this should work similarly across Windows versions. For more details, check these guides:

It seems unusual. Have you just applied the newest Windows 10 update yet? It might vanish with it. Check the Cortana settings to see if it’s disabled there. I looked through the Microsoft forum, but what I found was that Cortana search should be enabled (privacy options as you prefer).

I looked for the latest info and it showed it was current until I clicked check. Then it performed a thorough update, making it searchable again—now it looks quite different but functions properly! Thanks a lot for your assistance.
