I just switched to a fiber optic internet service and got a new router. I’m wondering if assigning a custom DNS server to the router is secure and if I can change it later. Also, I’m considering using OpenDNS.

It’s secure with a trusted DNS provider; DNS Explorer is generally trustworthy, so things should work well. To change it, for most routers you can either enable the DNS server automatically or adjust it manually. When you choose a manual DNS server and need to revert, pick the automatic option.

Currently, the DNS settings are missing because the ISP hasn't supplied them.

To change the DNS server you’d probably need to reset the configuration and set it fresh.
