I've been checking the HP Z420 lately as a budget workstation and the Xeon E7-4880 V2 for an upgrade costing around £3.60 GBP. The C602 motherboard uses an R1 socket, but I need an R2. Although they’re different models, since they’re both revisions of the same socket, can I solder an R2 onto it?

Impossible, even if it were, it wouldn't make sense because of the expense. Opt for an E5-2697 v2 which has fewer cores and threads but works with Z420. The E7-4880 v2 was intended for very costly high-end multi-socket servers.
