I acquired an HP pre-built unit previously that came with an RX5500, but recently switched to an RTX 3080 paired with a 1000-watt modular power supply. The HP model seems to need a specific 12V rail to remain powered during boot. Through some research, I managed to adapt it successfully. I discovered the system expects the 12V rail to stay active for startup, but I found a workaround by rerouting the 5V (purple) wire to the main 12V supply—this provides enough voltage only when the machine is off, which supplies the GPU with 5V safely. The current draw is around 0.6 watts. I’m considering a different motherboard but prefer this configuration. I don’t want to install a large 24-pin power strip inside my PC.

You can simply use an HP PSU converter cable and avoid any modifications.

It seems likely you wouldn't want to risk damaging the card, as it probably already did so. Running a lower voltage through a trace isn’t usually harmful. Turning off the power when shutting down the PC makes sense too. Jumping cables is really risky and could lead to issues later if a contact fails or causes shorts. If @SupaKomputa is right and HP offers adapter cables, it would be wise to use them. @jonnyGURU might help clarify whether this affects the power supply’s performance.

Thanks for the input. I managed to get it operational using the 1k PSU with a wire jump for power activation. Is it safe to keep the PSU powered continuously? It’s providing a steady 12 volts to the graphics card. I intend to use this machine as a remote setup. It also supports power-on via Ethernet.
