Smart individuals, here’s a clearer take on your situation. First, your Lenovo Thinkpad with Thunderbolt is functioning well with its dock for years. However, after an Intel firmware update, it starts disconnecting and reconnecting repeatedly each hour—this is quite bothersome. Lenovo claims the issue is Intel-related, but they don’t seem to have control over it. You’re looking for a fix.

For the second point, your HP EliteBook G5 also has Thunderbolt ports. At work, it works perfectly with a USB-C dock, even though it connects via Thunderbolt in the laptop. The BIOS confirms Thunderbolt support. However, when you connect it to your home Thunderbolt dock, it only switches to USB devices and fails to display anything. Drivers updates didn’t help. HP’s support stated their devices aren’t compatible with other accessories, which isn’t very helpful. Your IT team is also unclear about the problem. It seems the issue might be specific to HP accessories or compatibility. You’re not alone in this—someone should know how to resolve it.

the usual problem with thunderbolt docks is it has to be accepted by the system.. is there any thunderbolt driver on your hp.. try running see if it has a setting when you connect that lets you accept it.

I verified all drivers from HP, Lenovo, and Intel. The Thunderbolt security in BIOS is disabled, which works with both a HP Thunderbolt dock and a HP USB-C dock. Personally, I feel HP might restrict their laptops to only work with their own dock, especially on enterprise models. However, this doesn’t clarify why HDMI display output isn’t working. If I could fix the HDMI connection, it would resolve the issue. I’m running out of options.

I've tried Lenovo Thunderdock 3 with Dell systems—definitely worked well. HP experience is unclear to me.

Different device, but HP works perfectly with my Lenovo dock. It seems the HP laptop only functions with the HP dock at my workplace. I’m hoping they’ll secure their laptops. Why would they do that? Appreciate the advice!

Secure customers by linking them to HP as a supplier, yet avoid Thunderbolt compliance—otherwise they’ll lose more value than they gain.
