When it's w10 you're not allowed. If it's 8/8.1 you must determine the key, use a program like Produkey. Then turn off Windows or simply install it on another device with the key you obtained.

Consider using a tool like MagicalJellyBean to locate the CD key from your laptop. Record the details. Use the appropriate Windows version for your device and enter the same key to activate it. This approach applies only to Windows 8/8.1, not Windows 10.
