How to use xmp with 4 sticks of DDR5?
Hello, after upgrading to the AM5 platform, I installed four new Corsair Vengeance RGB DDR5 16GB sticks at 6000MHz. But I can't reach the rated speeds of 6000MHz and only get 4800MHz with XMP enabled. Could anyone explain why this happens? Also, is it possible to achieve the full 6000MHz with all four sticks in my setup? My current build includes: motherboard MSI MAG X670E, Ryzen 9 7900X, 3060 Ti xlr8 GPU, and a new 32GB Corsair Vengeance RAM.
Operating with 4 DDR5 modules at 6000Mhz on AM5 presents significant challenges because of the memory controller limitations. This isn’t the first time someone has asked about it. It’s probably more practical to return the RAM and request two sticks instead. You might also consider updating your BIOS to the newest release, as this can enhance compatibility with the memory.
At Zen4's debut, achieving 6000Mhz across four DIMMs was extremely challenging unless you had specific expertise. Recently, newer BIOS versions seem more manageable, especially with Hynix hardware. I'm unsure about the Corsair kit's configuration, but adjusting XMP settings and lowering the clock speeds manually should work. Or are you implying you've already tried and 4800Mhz was the maximum?
The current setup reached 4800m with the existing configuration. Updating BIOS and ensuring drivers are current helped, but I’m unsure if switching to two sticks at 6000m with XMP would be better than using four with XMP at 4800m.
Reaching 6000MHz would be extremely challenging without manually fine-tuning the settings. You might have a chance with 5200 or 5600MHz, but using four 32GB drives is difficult on any modern system. Perhaps you could improve your luck by using four 48GB drives at 5600MHz, as those seem more manageable. Alternatively, consider giving up on four sticks and opting for two instead. Running at such high frequencies with just four sticks remains nearly out of reach.
I adjusted the details because the kit is 16GBx2, not 32GBx2. I’m using this PC mainly for intense gaming and streaming Spotify at once. The graphics card I was thinking of is a 4070Ti, which is a high-performance gaming GPU. I’m just concerned that 32GB might not be sufficient or if I made a mistake.
32GB suffices for intense gaming, 64GB is more than enough, and 128GB is excessive.
