How to upgrade a desktop computer to use two monitors.
How to upgrade a desktop computer to use two monitors.
I recently purchased a new desktop running Windows 11. Details…
The system includes a 12th Gen Intel® Core i3-12100 processor at 3.30 GHz, an ASRock H610-M-HDS/M.2 motherboard, two 8GB Team DDR4 memory modules, a 500GB Team NVMe drive, and two 500GB Team GX2 SATA SSDs.
I plan to set up a dual-monitor configuration. The board features a 15-pin d-type analog connector and an HDMI port. I need guidance on the software steps required for this setup and whether I must purchase additional hardware or simply download an application. It seems the PC should recognize the resolution of the other monitor.
I was informed that the 15-pin d-type connector is analog, which surprised me since I assumed it was digital. I think a HDMI to DVI adapter or an HDMI monitor would work. Additionally, I previously bought a CCTV system with a 15-pin d-type connector and a corresponding adapter. How can this be compatible if the connector type differs?
Please clarify.
Desmond.
The mobo website lists three outputs—d-sub/vga dvi and hdmi—and they function independently, allowing each to drive a different monitor without conversion, unless the display lacks compatible input. Simply connect the monitor, and Windows will automatically determine the supported resolutions. You may need to adjust which output becomes the primary display if the settings change. Press the windows key and type "resolution" to open the correct Windows configuration app.
It seems to feature only two models.

USAFRet has a point. The motherboard doesn't have a D-Sub port; it only supports Analogue and HDMI. I've been informed it's an ASRock H610-M-HDS/M.2 (rev 2.0). Upon checking the back, it only has Analogue and HDMI. I'm using an old monitor connected to the Analogue output—it doesn't matter which is the main source, but HDMI would give better quality. This setup looks fine. However, the main challenge is arranging them aesthetically together. This model features dual analog and digital outputs, and the specs are correct.
The listed models don't appear to match any existing entry in the catalog.
When working with the analogue d-sub for the primary display, the requirements for the secondary screen are simply an HDMI cable (provided the secondary screen supports HDMI input).
If Display port is another term for DVI, then the H610M-HVS/M.2 R2.0 appears to be the motherboard. I’m relying on the details provided by the shop. I expected the shop owner to be the one with the expertise here. The PDF manual available online seems to cover both models.
The display port is not another name for DVI. There are four distinct connection types available. You can share an image of the back of your system to help identify the specific port.
