I favor software instead of the BIOS. Perhaps some hardware for tracking clock data. And maybe some software for stability testing.

Undervolting lowers heat production and energy use. It’s often suggested for laptops because they have tougher cooling systems. OP: why are you considering undervolting? The CPU shouldn’t be generating excessive heat.

Consider upgrading to a better cooler and repainting your CPU. Proper tuning is essential, similar to with an 8086k. Stress testing works well, but video encoding can cause issues on a 5GHz processor. This recommendation applies best for laptops.

Undervolting offers benefits without risks if stability is confirmed. -70mV works well on desktop chips, and -120mV can be tested. It saves power easily and reduces stress on VRMs. I own many i5-8500 SFF PCs and an HP Prodesk. For my distributed computing setup, I’m considering undervolting but the BIOS is stuck at 2018—restoring Vcore seems unlikely.
