I'm working on a friend's PC and the thermal paste seems really dry. The machine is from 2015, so I'm having trouble removing the CPU cooler. I've tried turning it on briefly and then taking it off, but it doesn't budge.

if the chipset supports it, removing the heatsink shouldn't cause major issues. Just make sure all securing screws are completely removed before pulling.

Even after taking out the screw, it still won<|pad|>. This is due to the age of the paste, which acts like a strong adhesive. Be gentle when applying 70% alcohol to the CPU (keep away from the motherboard if possible, though damage is unlikely). Also, make sure to power off the PC and disconnect the cable before taking off the heatsink (CPU cooler).

Twist gently while moving it sideways slowly. Once about one-third to half of the cold plate is away from the CPU, you can begin attempting to lift it starting from the side that’s detached.
