How to perform a fresh clean installation and migration?
Hey there!
I have two storage devices: an SSD running my current operating system and a HDD with my programs and games.
I’m thinking about replacing the SSD with a new one and installing a fresh OS, but I’m uncertain about the fate of the files on the old HDD.
Will the registry reinitialize itself? Can I manually transfer the settings from the old SSD to the new one into the correct folders?
Essentially, I want to know the best way to handle this transition.
Thanks!
Migration of the current operating system from Drive 1 to Drive 2 goes smoothly without any issues with other drives.
A fresh OS installation is a different matter.
All your programs would need to be reinstalled.
Most games can remain on the old drive, and the new game client simply indicated their location.
So...which option are you aiming for? Clone or clean install?
I aim for a clean setup here, but this system seems quite heavy.
There is no transfer of settings, programs, or Reg entries, and they cannot be copied. The exception is Steam game content.
It's disappointing, but I believed certain items or programs could still be useful. I set them up individually to conserve space, hoping it would provide a more secure solution after the full installation. However, it looks like that approach wasn't the right one from the start.
In the future, simply store the essential/regular software on the C drive while keeping files, games, and offline content on other drives.
When an application is installed, it creates numerous entries in the Registry and other places. The new operating system doesn't recognize these changes. While some programs are straightforward enough to move, it's generally better to restart everything for a more secure and efficient setup.
