How to manage your computer from another space
How to manage your computer from another space
I'm trying to upgrade my current setup with the NVidia Shield TV in my living room. I have my PC about 30+ feet away, using a 20ft USB 3.0 cable and a hub that includes a wireless mouse, keyboard, and Bluetooth 5.0 dongle. The signal keeps dropping, especially when connecting everything to the Shield TV. I prefer using the Shield for gaming with good FPS and no lag. I want to control my PC directly via the wireless mouse and keyboard connected to it, not through the Shield. When I move closer to the hub, I can still manage the PC, but I’m limited to around 10-15 feet from my living room chair where both devices are placed. The idea of moving the PC isn’t possible. Do you have any recommendations? Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Consider shortening the USB extension cable and ensuring the dongle or receiver is visible to devices. Position the dongle above appliances to prevent interference. A floor plan could clarify your distance from the PC and display, suggesting a possible relocation of the system. What are the make and model of your wireless peripherals?
Thank you for your reply.
I'm having trouble moving the PC or connecting to the USB hub. The mouse and keyboard are wireless devices with a 2.4G signal, which is why they remain silent during use—they only click when close. They function well when within range.
Is there a method to strengthen the USB signal or run these peripherals via PoI (power over internet)?
Also, how can I add an image using a tiny image link?
Thank you.
configure your laptop or desktop to the desired location, then connect to Steam on the primary PC. After logging in, access the second PC and you’ll find an option to stream your game from the main PC.
There are USB signal boosters and KVM switches that use Ethernet connections, though you might find those expensive. The term POI isn't clear—sending power over the internet isn't possible, but there is a version called POE that provides power over Ethernet for devices.
Thanks for the suggestion but I'm worried it will take up too much space and I would have to constantly move the streaming PC so it doesn't occupy room when not in use. I just don't want to always move and set up the streaming PC in the living room every time I need to use it, which happens daily. I want to be able to control and use my gaming PC while mirroring it through the NVIDIA Shield TV.
You were referring to POE and wanted ideas to enhance the USB signal for devices. I’ll explore some USB signal boosters that work well with 2–2.4G dongles and Bluetooth dongles, making it cleaner. Also, can you add the booster to the existing 20-foot USB cable?
Yes, a signal booster would function with a 20ft cable. You likely need a direct link to the system and the device connected via the USB cable, which isn't clear about using a hub. The only time I experienced long USB runs was connecting peripherals like keyboards, mice, or printers directly, not through a hub at the end.
just to confirm, should i include the 20ft signal boosted USB cable with the existing 20ft non-boosted cable i already own? would that give me a total of 40ft of boosted USB cable connected to my pc?
could this affect the usb port?
i noticed some listings mention a small power brick for power, though they’re usually 50ft long.
i was considering this one because it claims to support a usb hub
