You’ve got a blank SSD ready for Linux. After downloading and transferring the file, just plug it into your PC and follow the setup instructions. Make sure the drive is properly recognized by checking its status in the BIOS/UEFI. Since it’s new to you, take your time with the installation process and refer to the official documentation for any specific steps.

You need to convert the .iso file into a DVD or USB drive and start from there to set up the SSD.

Convert the ISO file to a CD or DVD, or store it on a USB drive. https://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop/...on-windows https://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop/...on-windows Once the media is ready, start it and adhere to the guidance. Make sure to back up your important files beforehand, and also set up a Windows repair disk in case something goes wrong.

You received an SD card and plan to check it out later this morning.

Search for methods to run Ubuntu alongside your current Windows setup. Choose the SSD during installation so it remains unaffected. These steps should prevent issues and help achieve your goal.

Avoid handling it once you've processed the .iso file.

You should switch the "FreeDOS" option to "ISO Image." The instructions don’t specify a different step, but trying this often resolves the issue.

Yes, you can still access the flash drive through Windows Explorer even if it's not directly mounted.

Are you referring to using it from the flash drive? There should be no access to the drive—no open files or running programs. Both the ISO and Rufus must be installed on your computer, not on the flash drive itself.
