I purchased my laptop about three to four years ago and now I need to upgrade it by adding an SSD while keeping the HDD. I bought a Samsung 860 EVO SSD and want to install it without losing any files from the old C drive. I plan to use the SSD as my new operating system.

Selecting m.2 and laptop supports m.2 ensures compatibility. For 2.5", clone the HDD to SSD and then everything should work. Just use a machine that can handle the drives and consider tools like Minitool Partition Wizard.
