I received a A1286 MacBook Pro without a pre-installed OS, but it doesn’t come with another Mac to test. The hard drive is present, yet the recovery tools aren’t working—Goblet spins and stops, and Internet Recovery fails. I’m trying to install macOS from an USB drive so I can proceed.

Did you purchase this latest version? If you got it brand new and it isn’t pre-installed with macOS, you should reach out to Apple support right away. For used copies or any deal that might cancel the warranty, try installing a different operating system on your PC (such as the ones listed here: How to download and install macOS - Apple Support) and attempt to boot from the recovery disk. Additionally, if you own another Mac, you can quickly generate a recovery drive there to help recover the faulty one.

I don’t have any more Macs, and this one is only a few years old. I got it secondhand, so your other advice doesn’t apply.

It seems you didn’t test my other suggestions. It’s unlikely you managed to boot from a recovery drive in just four minutes. Make sure the boot priority in the BIOS was set correctly, placing the recovery drive above your main boot section.

You’re asking about an older MacBook Pro from the past ten years that doesn’t run macOS, and you want to know how it was handled or what changes were made.

I encountered the same issue with both my 2020 MacBook Air Intel i5 model and my sister’s 2020 MacBook Air M1 version. The solution involved using an adapter from USB-C to Ethernet and performing an internet recovery through that method.

Consider an alternative approach: locate a friend who uses a Mac and guide them through creating a bootable macOS installer on apple.com, then start it by pressing the designated option key at launch.

TransMac is a tool designed to help you generate a Mac OS installer on a Windows flash drive. You can find more details at the provided link. If Internet Recovery boots completely, consider resetting the system clock to 2015. Security certificates on older OS versions may no longer be valid.
