How to increase the speed of an Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 at 3.00GHz without using BIOS?
Hello everyone, I'm planning to overclock my Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 @ 3.00GHz CPU. It's on a standard computer I purchased, and I've taken out all the CD drives. I have ample PSU power available.
overclocking the CPU means adjusting the FSB frequency if the mainboard maker doesn’t offer any overclocking utilities for Windows. You’d likely have to use BIOS, though I’m skeptical they’d provide a Windows tool since increasing FSB also boosts RAM speed and needs retraining before powering it up. Some older boards had physical switches to change FSB speeds, but not every board supported FSB overclocking. It seems you’re stuck with either the hardware or BIOS options.
The system is a Dell OptiPlex 780, and you're wondering if it can be modified via BIOS or if it's restricted. There might be limitations regarding changes.
unless swapping the mainboard, this is your sole choice

oh wait, your CPU is already running at 9x... so it's not possible

Don't attempt it. The processor from 2008 is 85% slower than today's models. It won't provide noticeable improvement. I assembled an E8400 for my wife's business. Office work seems fine. The graphics card is decent. I didn't upgrade it for a good reason. Pre-built laptops and PCs have minimal BIOS adjustment options, similar to what you need for overclocking. The new model might not fit your Dell case setup. I'm unsure if that applies to yours.
That is an ancient CPU. OC will not cure the lag. Software has been optimized for more modern CPU's Enjoy the lag or upgrade. You don't have many choices.
