my 3770 features an unlocked multiplier on the gigabyte z77x-up7, which can increase up to 4.3 without affecting the BCLK. when i was using a 3770k it failed and had to be replaced, and i discovered that the model i had was equipped with an unlocked multiplier. i'm not sure if this issue was related to the motherboard or the cpu.

According to the usual understanding, using a sandy bridge and an ivy bridge that are not strictly non-K CPUs enabled you to raise the multiplier to +4 beyond the maximum stock boost value.
