As a background note, I operate and play games from my home office. My setup includes a desk with two monitors (Dell P2419H). Right now, my work laptop is linked to a Dell D6000 dock via a USB 3-C port. This dock supports wired internet, a mouse, and a headset. When I need to play games, I switch the USB-C cable from my laptop to my desktop (which is positioned under my desk). For regular work tasks, I connect the USB-C back to my laptop. Everything functions smoothly and without issues at the moment.

My goal is to achieve a quiet performance setup. (I’ve built several previous systems, but this one is nine years old.) I want to ensure everything is configured correctly.

However, I understand that routing video through the D6000 with my new gaming PC might be problematic due to DisplayLink behavior and could affect performance or CPU usage. Also, I believe the dock’s maximum transfer speed is around 5 Gbps.

Other points to consider:
- I prefer powering my laptop via USB-C, which makes a standard KVM switch less practical.
- My current monitors are limited to 1080P, but I’d like flexibility for future upgrades to 4K.
- Each monitor has one HDMI and one DP port. The D6000 dock offers two DPs and one HDMI. My new GPU (likely a Radeon RX 6800 XT) will have one HDMI and three DPs. I’m aware that KVM switches can affect performance, so direct connections between the GPU and screens might be better.
- I need to decide how to share these two monitors and peripherals connected to the docking station with my new gaming desktop.

My thoughts on possible solutions:
1. Connect the GPU directly to one monitor via DP and the other via HDMI. The dock connects to one monitor via DP and the second via HDMI. Note: I might need to mix ports because the GPU has three DPs and one HDMI, while the dock has two DPs and one HDMI, and each monitor has one HDMI and two DPs.
- When using the desktop, link the dock’s USB 3-C to the desktop for peripheral access.
- When using the laptop, connect the dock’s USB 3-C to the laptop for full access to peripherals, screens, and power.

Should this arrangement work? Are mixed ports causing any issues? Or could using the USB 3-C with my desktop introduce problems because the dock has its own video connections to the screens?

Thunderbolt won't be easily switchable unless you locate a dedicated switch for that device. There aren't typically KVMs included by design. Current KVMs usually support 1080p, but focus on frequency rating—like HDMI 2.2 or DP 1.4 if your monitor runs at 144Hz. Choose switches with the appropriate rating. Keep it straightforward: use a KVM or dock, not both, to reduce failure points and maintain performance. Some routers offer USB 3.0 or 3.1 ports, which can be useful for shared drives. In short, KVM switches are ideal when you only need mouse, keyboard, and GPU; USB peripherals should use a powered hub instead.
