When clearing CMOS, you don't necessarily need to remove the battery. You can usually just press the clear CMOS button and it should work.

Very little, but occasionally it can clear the memory controller when there are RAM slot problems. It's typically needed when you can't reach the BIOS.

If you can reach the BIOS, it's better to revert to the system defaults rather than using CMOS settings.
