I already have a modified version of Windows, so the update for upgrading to Windows 10 isn’t installed. I’m interested in purchasing Windows 10 to test it, but only see Windows 8 available on the Microsoft Store. Can I buy a product key for my current OS and install it without losing data, so I can upgrade later to Windows 10? I’m using Windows 7 right now.

Windows 10 is still in development. I recommend trying Windows 8.1, which can later be upgraded to 10.

The installer includes an upgrade tool that was once problematic, though I haven't used it recently. You can also save the files you wish to retain and perform a fresh installation, which is my usual approach. Note: If you need to maintain Windows 7, a free upgrade will be available for all Microsoft OS versions starting with Win 7. Updated: June 3, 2015 by Swisscheesy

I understand the free upgrade, but I thought it was only available to genuine copies.

Check the bottom right corner of your desktop for any warning text like "this build is not genuine." If you don't see it, the upgrade might still be possible as long as Windows Update is enabled.
