My existing machine struggles with advanced CAD tools and serious applications, so I’m unsure what RAM capacity would be ideal. I’m hoping to explore several areas over the next four years, planning upgrades as needed, so I want plenty of flexibility for learning and possibly launching some business ideas that have already caught attention.

It depends on your motherboard model. Which one are you running? One two-rank memory bar performs better than a single rank in single-channel mode, but it's slower than two single-rank units operating in dual-channel. What I mean is it won't instantly turn into a two-rank setup. To stay ahead, opt for two (or the number of channels your motherboard supports) with double-rank chips—this can give you a 5-100% increase in usable memory.
Additionally, the maximum amount of RAM you can install is influenced by the motherboard model as well.
I’m checking the b550-e specs, and it seems it can handle 64GB. The dimming units in the 4x16GB configuration are all single-rank, which is important because they changed to that design back in December 2020. This means dual-rank or four single-rank sticks will behave as if the memory is dual-rank. Appreciate the guidance!
