Comparing the upgrades: 12GB at 1333MHz DDR3 vs 8GB at 3000MHz DDR4. It depends on your needs—more RAM at higher speeds can boost performance, but the difference may not be significant if the bottleneck is elsewhere.

It varies based on your processor type. For AMD Ryzen, 2933/3000MHz or higher RAM is advised, while Intel doesn't rely as much on speed. A slight slowdown might only add a few FPS, but having more memory than the recommended amount—like 12 or 16GB instead of 8GB—can boost performance noticeably.

from Phenom 2 x4 965 ASUS M4A785T-M 2x2GB+2x4GB (I know it can be a bit slow but it was a gift so…) to Ryzen 3 1300X ASUS A230M-K 1x8GB (though I’m thinking about adding another 8 soon)

I'm switching from AM3 to AM4, which means I need to upgrade my RAM. My goal is to add another 8 gigabytes to reach a total of 16 gigabytes, but I'm unsure about the timeline for this change.

You'll notice a clear improvement, and it seems you're not pushing your system to its limits. However, the upgrade route looks quite weak—an A320 chipset is really lacking. Consider spending an extra $10 for a more affordable B350 or B450 board. Why go with a 1300x? It's better to buy two boards together. Ryzen, particularly the early models, gains a lot from dual-channel memory speeds.

you’re getting the Ryzen at a budget price of about 85 dollars with the motherboard included. it’s a solid deal since a 2200g card alone sells for around 130 dollars nearby, while the cheapest B350 would cost more than that combo.

It makes sense. Regarding RAM, the difference is noticeable mainly in benchmarked tasks such as games or other high-demand applications.

It seems the 8 gigs might be enough for now, thanks everyone.
