Backstory: Like many others, I upgraded to Windows 10 recently. I REALLY don't like it. My experience with it was buggy, and driver support seemed lack-luster compared to my needs. An OS I find myself retuning to constantly is Ubuntu. Linux has always been close to my heart, but I keep finding myself on Windows since I need stuff like Photoshop and my steam library. (only 30% of my games are Linux-compatible). While I've promised myself that I will let Windows 10 grow as an OS and let Microsoft release their first Service Pack for it, I really don't want to wait around on 8.1. Questions: - How good and accurate is WINE? Will I be able to use Photoshop, Maya, and play Steam games in it smoothly? - If WINE isn't as good is I would like it to be, will running a virtual machine with Windows 7 or 8 be enough to play games and run software properly? - How much extra RAM and CPU power does it take to run a virtual machine vs. the real thing? I currently have an i7 4770K and 8GB of RAM. Thanks in advance!

Really? That’s the case. Most games don’t run well or at all. Using a virtual machine would be a huge performance issue. Stick with 8.1 or 10. Your 10 hasn’t had any problems, so you might just need to check the bug list online to confirm it’s not your problem.

It's due to the lack of players with Win 10 yet. Rawr. Unless you enable compatibility mode.

Ahh wine... I used to like wine on my Mac a few years back, and I still do for some free games. For Steam it was a real challenge—needed a lot more setup and I didn’t feel comfortable diving in. Most things work, but it tends to be pretty unstable. In short, it can function. Everything is possible, though it takes time and patience. Wine is especially tricky, even though Windows 10 is running smoothly. The only issue I’ve faced is with my 580 monitor no longer working. Otherwise, everything else is fine.

Seems really tough right now—wouldn’t be happy with Linux unless things improved. - anything extra required to handle both systems at once would mean basically dividing your machine in half and using one side for each.

I haven't touched WINE for a long time. The nearest alternative to running Windows on Linux is using the Mono framework on a Pi, which works best with command-line tasks. For gaming on Linux, I suggest trying Steam OS.

Hey everyone! I was really looking forward to hearing the other side, but the reality is actually more beneficial for all in the long term. I think I’ll keep using version 8.1 until early 2016. After that, I’ll check out the current state of Windows 10.

Check the pre-made packages in PlayOnLinux; if something isn’t available, skip Wine since setup can be tricky.
