I struggled to make it function on my own; OptiFine and Forge didn't cooperate...

I'm using MC 1.7.10 with MultiMC to launch an instance, like the Feed-The-Beast Resurrection pack. Just place the Optifine .jar (OptiFine_1.7.10_HD_U_B4) inside <Instance name>/minecraft/mods. Since you don't need to load Optifine or Forge into minecraft.jar, it works smoothly with MultiMC and MagicLauncher handling everything automatically. Forge 10.13.2.1291 is the current version for Minecraft 1.7.10, while Forge 11.14.1.1333 is the latest for 1.8.1. If you're targeting 1.7.10 (most mods support that), go with the 10.13 branch.

Tried it myself and it functioned correctly. Created a new profile using Minecraft vanilla 1.8 release as the jar file, then clicked play and waited for the download to complete. Installed the latest Forge installer (forge-1.8-11.14.1.1333-installer), executed the jar, and installed the client. Ran the Forge version once, then closed the game. For OptiFine, I downloaded the most recent 1.8 release (OptiFine_1.8.0_HD_U_D1). Place the jar in the folder Forge generates mods for, and it should work fine. It succeeded at least for me.
