If I just let people upgrade my software and stop letting anyone outside my home network touch my NAS, then I won't have to worry about viruses stealing my stuff.

Most viruses and bad software come from actions YOU take online. They often trick you by sending emails that look cool, like asking for your photo or offering a free Photoshop download. When you click those links, the computer gets hacked immediately. Then they send you fake invoices for Finster accounts or tell you that Citibank is suspicious but ask you to check something. Every single link in these messages leads to a virus waiting to infect your files.
