How crappy is my computer?
How crappy is my computer?
Thanks for the suggestion. I explored the site and found lighter alternatives like Mate and Xfce that could work well on my old hardware. Cinnamon still seems solid, but I’m open to trying Mint for a trial. Linux is definitely more efficient and resource-conscious compared to Windows, especially with an SSD.
My vintage rig is older than most of the systems I run Mint Cinnamon on. I own a 32-bit MATE laptop from 2009 that originally came with 32-bit Windows. It should work with 64-bit Cinnamon 21. I believe the System Settings are more user-friendly, though I’m not sure if it’s a big deal. The performance gap isn’t a major concern. I’ve had a few small laptops with 2GB of RAM and 32GB storage; Windows filled them up quickly and they became useless. Now both have Linux Mint Cinnamon and function well. My current setup is my "Screwdriver"—it helps me fix things, the WiFi is working, and I need help moving files if needed. There’s a great discussion forum for Linux Mint if you have questions.
