I've never worked with overclocking out of caution about damaging the chip. I understand it's possible and that I bought a scythe kotetsu cooler because a regular one wouldn't suffice, but that's where preparation ends. What information should I have to perform a safe and effective overclock? Your help is greatly appreciated, please don't hesitate to reply if you forget!

Start by reviewing the overclocking methods discussed in the article.
https://www.overclock.net/forum/5-intel-...stics.html
Typically, you'd expect performance between 4.6ghz and 4.8ghz; higher speeds may require a liquid cooling system, though this largely depends on your motherboard.

All the necessary information and tools are available in the Intel Temperature Guide by CompuTronix. Good luck and let us know what you achieved for an overclock.

Start by reviewing the overclocking methods discussed.
A typical speed range is around 4.6 to 4.8 GHz; if you exceed this, a liquid cooling system may be necessary, though this largely depends on your motherboard.

i had a 4690k processor until about a week ago. i used it in a z97 mini-itx board, in a very small case (cm elite 130), and a corsair 120mm all in one cooler, along with a gtx 980. the machine was mainly used as a plex server and ran at full capacity for transcoding and video encoding projects i was doing at the time. it was in a very hot environment. my 24x7 overclock reached 4.5 ghz, which stayed stable for about four years until the water cooler was moved and then leaked onto the motherboard, causing it to fail completely.
