Hosting game servers from your home setup
Hello! Im planning to run a few game servers at home and im curious if there is a good solution for the ip addresses, or a way to sort of hide my home ip not to sure if this even makes sense lmao Thanks to anyone that understands my stupidity
Essentially, use a VPN on a cloud instance from providers like Hetzner, DigitalOcean, Linode, AWS, GCP, Azure, etc. Direct all traffic through it to your home server. External users will see only your cloud IP address, though there may be slight delays based on location and network conditions. As another option, host the game server in the cloud.
Be cautious when running servers at your residence for long durations. ISPs usually dislike this practice and frequently end accounts due to it.
Let me know your perspective, but I can't confirm if it violates their terms of use without more details.
Att and most major US carriers generally disallow hosting servers locally. They usually only mind if you meet certain conditions: 1) You generate normal traffic and users (like sharing large data files monthly or serving many people at once). 2) Your servers aren’t under constant attack (strong protection and limited access). Once DDoS attacks begin, they’ll take notice and may require you to relocate or stop service. The smartest approach is estimating server usage and evaluating Cloudflare costs to safeguard your connection so threats hit their network instead of yours. Cloudflare provides protection for $20 a month for Minecraft servers and covers specific HTTP/HTTPS ports, but other services typically cost more.
