I hope I shared this in the correct group! Right now I’m handling bookkeeping for my mom and brother, who live together. I wanted to figure out how to set up a cloud storage solution over Wi‑Fi for my personal PC. They’d be able to store their QuickBooks files there without needing their own devices. It would feel like a real-time dropbox, but only using one hard drive. I don’t need them to access all four of my drives.

Networking knowledge is currently zero. Updated: Used Google, I'm not very smart.

The NAS hard drive could match the desktop unit, but it might differ in specifics. The desktop unit typically houses its own hard drive, while the NAS unit usually connects via a separate drive.

A NAS refers to network attached storage. It’s essentially a storage device linked to a network via a hard drive, allowing all connected computers to view it as if it were installed locally—similar to having multiple USB drives on different machines. You can purchase affordable cloud storage solutions or inexpensive internet-based NAS units with a simple 3.5" desktop drive. More advanced options include multi-bay NAS systems or custom-built servers. For basic data sharing, a standard NAS enclosure paired with a drive works well. If you need better protection, choose a NAS that supports multiple drives, enabling mirroring—such as two 2TB drives for redundancy.

A NAS represents a solid investment, offering the simplest and most reliable option in my view.
