I've compiled some components and set up a server. Looking into OS options beyond FreeNAS, I'm considering alternatives that suit my needs for file storage, media streaming with Plex, and hosting a TS3 server. Cheers!

Ubuntu offers a solid choice for those who enjoy a bit of messiness. It supports file sharing via Samba, has many UPnP/DLNA features, and is highly customizable.

Ubuntu is a great choice, especially the desktop edition with a more user-friendly design. You have full freedom to customize your setup, and you won’t need FreeNAS.
