It’s useful to have RJ45 ports because they support modern Ethernet connections, while RJ11 is only for older phone lines. Using a RJ11 with an RJ45 port can cause issues, which is why you noticed it took time to understand the difference during setup.

You could try a few experiments to see if it’s feasible. The process would depend on the specific situation, but generally it would involve checking conditions step by step and measuring outcomes. It could vary in complexity based on resources and constraints.

It would require locating the wiring inside the walls, confirming it is completely connected to the wall jacks using the proper pin configuration, and buying a compact patch panel along with a switch. This assumes you don’t need to keep that cable for DSL or phone services.

The router placed nearby could also link to the DSL and function as a switch.

I need to connect to it further. I don’t rely on cabling for phone traffic; I use the internet instead. The fiber installation is planned in a few months, which should alter many aspects. Should I hold off or could it create additional issues?

You don’t have the right Ethernet wiring to your spaces. It’s best to bring in an electrician to check and fix the CAT5e connections, plus install a patch panel for a switch. Or consider replacing all the cables.

Even with faster connections arriving, there might still be restrictions from the existing wiring.

Various options are available. The speed could range from 10Mbps to potentially 100Mbps, depending on the cable setup and patch panel configuration. All connections share the same phone line, which prevents using Ethernet as it is currently configured.

You shouldn't handle the wires under any circumstances unless you discuss it with your telecom provider, since they might own them.
