Home game server.
Hello,
I’m seeking guidance on which components will suit my requirements best.
I plan to set up self-hosted game servers for ARK Ascended, Minecraft, Conan, and a few others. I’ll likely store Steam games and general files on my PC to free up space.
ARK will run as the main game cluster when new maps are added, with additional servers ready for others.
I’m considering a used HP ProLiant DL380 Gen9, mainly because it’s affordable.
For the CPU, I have two choices:
- Intel Xeon E5-2687W V3 10-Core at 3.10GHz
- Intel Xeon E5-2687W V4 12-Core at 3.00GHz
RAM isn’t a major concern, but I’ll start with 128GB DDR4 at 2400MHz.
After researching, ARK Ascended requires 2 cores and 12-16GB RAM per map.
Since I’m new to servers, I need to learn about operating systems—will I use Windows or Linux? How do I configure the firewall for network security?
I’m excited to get started and test things out, even if I make mistakes along the way.
Edit: A suggestion was to use CubeCoders for running the servers, possibly with Windows Server and multiple VMs per server.
