I shared some updates in the troubleshooting part earlier, but I'm still facing difficulties. I pay for gigabit internet, which usually works when I run online speed tests (fast.com, speedtest.net, etc.), and Task Manager confirms it. Yet, when downloading files from various sites—except a few—I only get around 4 Mbps according to Task Manager. I recently moved into this apartment, and I didn’t experience this issue before. Initially, I thought the servers I’m using were slow, but I tested downloading the same file on my laptop and got 200-300 Mbps (which is expected over Wi-Fi). I assumed my Wi-Fi adapter was the problem, which I bought to avoid running an Ethernet cable through the building, but nothing worked, so I switched to a wired connection. Still nothing. So far, I’ve eliminated:
- ISP (unless they’re intentionally throttling my computer)
- Server-side issues
- Wi-Fi adapter and its PCIe slot
- Read/write speeds on the NVMe SSD
The only remaining thing seems to be something unusual happening with my PC that I don’t understand. I’ve noticed faster downloads in some places, like through the Steam client or Google Drive, but not consistently. I’m completely confused about what’s going on and would really appreciate any advice. If it helps, let me know—I’m using an Asrock B450-M with a Ryzen 5 1600 AF.
Megabits are the unit here, but since my laptop connects via Wi-Fi, I anticipate slower speeds compared to a wired setup—no worries there. On my desktop, I’m still around 4 Megabits per second downloading, whereas speed tests show 800–900 Megabits per second.
You're checking your connection performance. If you're seeing 1 gigabit during a reasonable test, your downloads tend to be limited by the site's restrictions. The servers you're connecting to and the content you're downloading can affect this. Sometimes choosing specific Steam servers improves speeds, though I usually cap at about 12 MBps.
