You’re dealing with a special gateway instead of a regular router. This is your initial problem—replacing it isn’t straightforward because it affects your phone service too. I’m also an Xfinity customer. They seem to make this process quite difficult, especially when you need phone features. There’s probably one standard model available, and professional installation is recommended. Cable internet usually has higher latency, which is just a reality of the connection. You’ll also face limited upload speeds. In the near future, Docsis 3.1 updates should improve this, but it won’t help right now. The best path at the moment is checking if they can switch your gateway into bridge mode. This turns it into a modem, allowing you to use a router with better QoS settings. Another idea is to adjust the settings on the software your mom uses for uploading photos—it might restrict upload usage. That’s just a suggestion.

We don't rely on the phone service. Our mobile phones use AT&T, and that's all.

It seems a fresh modem won't improve upload speeds. Comcast has been slow to address these issues for years. If you're looking to cut your annual rental costs by $120, consider the SB6183, CM600, or a Docsis 3.1 model. Also, invest in a quality router with strong QoS features.

Helping with your current situation depends on the limits of your plan. The default settings don’t allow this adjustment, but you can use a different method for your gigabit plan (1000/40). This should work similarly when syncing devices to the cloud or under heavy upload conditions.
