With my 3800x I reach about 42-45°C during idle, climbing to 55-60°C when launching programs, sometimes up to 65°C. In games it stays around 59-61°C, but can hit 70°C under heavy CPU load. In Cinebench R20 it reaches 85°C (110W), while AIDA64 shows 65-70°C.
I’m considering lowering the voltage but haven’t noticed any thermal throttling. I prefer not to set static voltages/frequencies because I think it’s harmful. These temps are unusually high for a 240mm AIO. I’ve heard people achieve 9900K at 60-65°C with similar CPUs or others.
I cleaned the thermal paste with a paper towel and used MX-4 paste, changed the rad position (reduced temperature by 4°C), reset BIOS (it’s up-to-date), used AMD Balanced power plan and updated drivers. Nothing helped.
I didn’t install the backplate for the AIO, but I’m wondering if it significantly impacts cooling. Should I try re-mounting it? If yes, I’d like to do this as the final option since it would be quite time-consuming.
Idle temperatures seem stable, with your frequency staying consistent. The older Intel laptop would lower its clock to about 0.9 GHz during idle, but your current CPU can reach up to 3.8 GHz. After adjusting the minimum CPU usage, it consistently stayed above 4 GHz.
Ryzen third gen often faced issues with high idle times. However, as long as temperatures stay normal, it should be fine.
