Hello
I’m experiencing an issue with my old PC. After updating it, I still face high GPU temperatures when running games like World of Warcraft, even at low or medium settings. The GPU reaches around 107°C, and the fan speed jumps to about 4000 RPM during this time. When idle, temperatures are near 55°C, but they spike to between 70°C and 107°C while playing.

On the monitor, I see a PCIe PEX error recovery, and after resetting and using it for an hour, the counter shows 500. I’m playing at 1080p resolution. My system specs are as follows:
Case: BitFenix Shinobi Midi-Tower
Motherboard: ASUS Z87-A, Intel Z87 Mainboard - Sockel 1150
CPU: Intel Core i5-4670K 3.4 GHz (Haswell) Sockel 1150
GPU: Nvidia GeForce GTX 1660 SUPER
RAM: Avexir Core Series blue LED, DDR3-1600, CL9 - 8 GB Kit
CPU Cooler: Cooler Master Hyper 212 Evo
SSD: Samsung 840 Series 2.5", SATA 6G - 120GB
HDD: Western Digital Blue, SATA 6G, 3.5" - 1 TB
Power Supply: XFX Core Edition PRO Netzteil - 550 Watt

I don’t know how to verify it without looking at the case. I only recall the XFX 550w from around 2013.

Your 970 Strix would likely be affected by the downgrade, based on the readings from HWMonitor.

Apologies for this but do you know any method to check why GPU temperatures are so high? I have tried keeping the side panel off, which reduces the temps by about 5°C, so I don't think the case is making the fans spin at 4000 and causing temperature spikes.

What's the specific 1660 Super model?

The maximum RPM occurs because the GPU is overheating and attempting to cool itself. If the side of your case isn't adjusted, it's likely the thermal paste or pad on the video card is the problem. Fixing this involves disassembling the device, removing any existing paste, and applying fresh thermal paste and pads.

As others pointed out, verify your cards' thermal paste or pads, which may be dry.

Replacing thermal pads again could assist, but the 1660 Super tends to overheat as observed. PCIe issues may simply stem from bus retraining during power changes—no cause for concern there.

You can likely use the same thermal paste for your CPU, but it's wise to proceed cautiously since you haven't opened the GPU yet.
