I recently set up a dual boot with Ubuntu 14.04 and Windows 7 Ultimate. After some Linux issues, I reinstalled Ubuntu but instead of choosing the boot drive, I just started using it directly. From within Ubuntu, I can still access my Windows files on the other partition. I’m trying to figure out how to get into Windows and need your help quickly—thank you! I’m using stock Ubuntu 14.04 and Windows 7 Ultimate, both 64-bit.

Usually you have to remove or disable GRUB. Generally it swaps in the Windows bootloader and shows a menu when you start. You might need to turn GRUB back on or swap out the Windows bootloader, and Windows should work just fine. It’s situations like this when I choose to install each OS on its own partition and select it from the boot menu.

You’ll need a repair disk ready on a USB or optical drive. On the installation screen, select "Repair Your Computer" in the lower left corner. Next, open the command prompt (it may display a message about fixing Windows automatically) and run bootrec/fixmbr. Once complete, GRUB should disappear and you’ll be able to boot directly into Windows. If this doesn’t work, let me know and we’ll try another approach.
