If he relies on Internet Explorer, he won’t need to download or click anything to be exposed to malware. Harmful scripts might just pay for ads and run exploits that take advantage of browser flaws, especially since updates aren’t being applied. Additionally, this device will eventually fail. It’s wise to replace it soon, and he shouldn’t store critical files there permanently. Visiting untrusted sites on an outdated OS is risky—what could possibly go wrong? You can’t really expect to avoid malicious pages on Google either.
Generally speaking he should be fine, of course there's always the risk of downloading the wrong thing once and screwing up the system permanently. I don't know how tech savvy (read willing to learn) the guy is but maybe you can talk him into trying out Ubuntu MATE lts, it should do what he needs while being much more up to date (therefore more secure) and without taxing his old system.
Ensure the POSready adjustment is applied for two more years. Firefox with an adblocker is also strongly advised.
He isn't familiar with Linux or its usage. He's limited to Windows. In Korea, Linux and MacOS aren't advised since the country relies on ActiveX for most websites.
If he’s just using it for small payments, keep him near those windows. I think the PC he’s running—like the old potato for his computer—might not be very powerful, so Windows 10 could run slower. Also, if you suggest Windows 10, you’ll have to do it for him yourself. That would take a lot of your time and cause a lot of frustration while searching for outdated drivers for old hardware... and support was already gone before Vista.
Oh God. If he doesn't have any sensitive information on his pc I'd say let him use xp, if it ever gets screwed up you can wipe the drive and install 10. Maybe have him backup his important documents on google drive or something while he still can.
