So after solving the problem of what browser to use (Firfox 3.0, anything newer seemed to have issues as they relied on the SSE2 instruction set), I've come across the problem of not having the right media payer for this old rig, as VLC, MPC and windows media player are unable to play a simple DVD, or any video file for that matter, without lag, the video going blank (e.g. grey turns mostly in VLC with a few scattered squares of the proper footage). What will be the best media player for my computer? (Please in mind that its a Pentium III 1GHz without the SSE2 instructions favoured by most if not all new media players-RAM is of no concern BTW).

It seems a P3 might struggle to handle 720p quality, possibly due to insufficient power.

I believed it wasn't strong enough for browsing on the web until I got FF, which is why I'm searching for another media player.

It's capable enough for web browsing, but video playback demands significantly more CPU power if VLC and MPC aren't handling it. I don't think any other software will be able to do it well, since they're very lightweight and can play almost anything—perhaps only if the video quality is reduced.

I doubt your system has the right codec for this task. Even without hardware support for h.264, it will run in software mode and the CPU will handle decoding, which is very slow. This results in choppy video or a sluggish slideshow. If you upgrade to at least the Radeon 9xxx series or GeForce 6xxx graphics, the GPU will decode videos efficiently instead of relying on your CPU. Using a codec pack like CCCP or K-Lite Codec pack won’t work well together, as they often conflict and cause crashes.

I believe the lowest quality I can achieve is with a DVD, though saving the initial MPC version seems to function, even if at roughly half the usual frame rate.

You're currently using an FX 5500, but your GeForce 6200 is on its way.
