Here’s a solution in the style of Linus—simple and effective: RDP it up!
Linus's approach is essentially a KVM setup, which isn't needed for your needs. (It's also quite costly.) You're merely connecting to a server for file handling, not aiming to play games across multiple locations, so running RDP or VNC inside each VM works just fine. Since everything runs on Proxmox, you can log into its web interface from your primary PC and use its native KVM client. Your server could simply operate in a headless mode somewhere else.
linus's approach is simply due to his ability. Such options are very expensive and practically restrictive, even without fiber. I have an unraid server next to my desktop with a windows VM for certain tasks, but it won’t replace my main machine unless I face such a severe space shortage that I can’t afford the extra half a square meter it would take. Also, you won’t save much power because you’re adding more hardware that runs continuously just to eliminate a box that only uses energy when needed.
