Around 50 gadgets at most, though if there are more than that I’d love to explore them out of interest. Oops, I forgot to mention it earlier. Not all devices are connected simultaneously, but the Wi-Fi sharing feature is a bit annoying because with Android you just scan a QR code, while iOS lets you see the password directly in settings.

I didn't know whether it was your archer C7 or your TL WR840N, but I could only add more than 30 devices to the whitelist before hitting the limit.

It's true, you can add as many MAC addresses to the whitelist as you want on OpenWRT. The main constraint would be available memory, which shouldn't be an issue even with a large number of entries.
