Help with OVerclocking my GPU
Hello everyone!
Let me clearly outline my setup for you.
Processor: Intel i3 4130 at 3.4Ghz
RAM: 8GB DDR3
GPU: Nvidia GeForce GTX 950 with 1GB RAM and 2GB Intel onboard graphics
MotherBoard: Gigabyte H81M-S1
Looking at it, this isn’t a powerful machine but has worked well for me.
Recently I purchased Mass Effect Andromeda and after playing it, I realized my rig might struggle with that game. So I decided to try overclocking the GPU.
After some research, I found that MSI Afterburner is the most effective tool for this purpose. I only heard that overclocking could potentially harm the GPU, which worries me. Plus, I’m very new to tech, so I’m asking for your advice...
How can I use MSI Afterburner to safely increase my GPU’s speed enough to run ME:A without risking damage?
Thanks in advance.
Tarun PV is here to explain his setup.
Processor: Intel i3 4130 at 3.4Ghz
RAM: 8GB DDR3
GPU: Nvidia GeForce GTX 950 with 1GB RAM and 2GB built-in graphics
MotherBoard: Gigabyte H81M-S1
He shared his experience, noting it’s not powerful but reliable.
Recently he purchased Mass Effect Andromeda and questioned if his rig could handle the game. He decided to try overclocking his GPU.
After researching, he found MSI Afterburner is a top tool for this purpose.
He was concerned overclocking might harm his GPU, especially since he’s new to tech.
Hello everyone!
Let me clearly outline my setup for you.
Processor: Intel i3 4130 at 3.4Ghz
RAM: 8GB DDR3
GPU: Nvidia GeForce GTX 950 (1GB) with Intel integrated graphics (2GB)
Motherboard: Gigabyte H81M-S1
As you can observe, it's not a powerful machine but has served me adequately.
Recently, I purchased Mass Effect Andromeda and after reviewing its performance, I wondered if my system could handle it. So, I opted to attempt overclocking the GPU.
After some research, I discovered that MSI Afterburner is an excellent tool for this purpose. Although I heard overclocking might risk damaging the GPU—especially since I’m new to tech—I decided to give it a try.
I found out that it’s safe to use and can help ensure stability.
For your reference, you can download the software from the links provided. Run it, record your results, and compare them with your original benchmarks.
If your memory clock is around 3500MHz, consider increasing it by 25MHz (some recommend 50 or even 100MHz). Run Furmark (AA at 4 or higher) for about 15 minutes. Watch for any unusual behavior like blockiness, lines, or color distortions—those are signs you’ve pushed the GPU too far.
Artifacts and crashes indicate overclocking has gone too far. This process can be time-consuming.
Consider your typical gaming sessions: an overclock should enhance performance gradually rather than cause sudden changes.
Furmark will help verify stability, while also confirming if the FPS improvement is real.
Afterward, increase the core clock in small increments of 25MHz or more, but avoid exceeding your memory clock. The total gain should be modest.
Keep monitoring temperatures closely using MSI's OSD and adjust fan speeds as needed.
Stick to safe temperature limits—keep the GPU below 79°C. You can customize fan curves in MSI’s settings.
Your build seems more CPU-dependent, but it’s still functional.

How can I utilize MSI Afterburner to boost my GPU's performance to a level that won't endanger it and ensure smooth operation of ME:?
Thanks in advance.
I recommend checking out http://store.steampowered.com/app/402290/. Try it out. Keep track of your results. Alternatively, download the Unigine Heaven benchmark from http://www.guru3d.com/files-details/down...hmark.html and run it as well. Record your scores. You can also visit http://www.ozone3d.net/benchmarks/fur/ for additional data.
Assuming your memory clock is around 3500MHz, increase it by 25MHz (some prefer 50 or even 100MHz). Run Furmark (AA at 4 or higher) for about 15 minutes. Watch out for any irregularities like blockiness, lines, or unusual colors—those are signs you've pushed the OC too far. This process can be time-consuming. How long do your gaming sessions typically last? An overclock should not be a sudden jump. Furmark will help verify stability. Stability is important, but an OC is often used to boost FPS. That's why I suggested the other two tools. After completing an OC and Furmark session, run them again with antialiasing set to at least 4, and note any score improvements. If nothing changes, consider increasing your core clock in increments of 25MHz. This is usually less impactful than the memory boost. After each change, test for stability and score gains.
While testing, keep an eye on your GPU and CPU temperatures closely. MSI's OSD can assist with monitoring. You should aim to keep the GPU temperature below 79°C. Others may run it at 80°C or higher, but I prefer a cooler setup for safety. MSI AB also offers a fan control panel—feel free to adjust the fan speed to a more aggressive setting if needed.
With the i3 in use, this build appears CPU-intensive, though it's stable.
Well, it's unusual... I followed your instructions, downloaded benchmark software, and initially ran tests. Then I increased my memory clock by 25 and retested... and... well, the lowest FPS, average FPS, and total score dropped.
🙁
I'm not sure if I made a mistake...
And to address your question about gaming duration: I usually play for a few hours on weekdays, but weekends I often run games while my PC is active.
I would really appreciate your help with this.
