Help with MSI X470 Ryzen 7 1700 overclocking
Hello everyone, this is my first time posting. I have some questions regarding the overclocking procedure for a Ryzen 7 1700 on an MSI X470 Gaming PLUS MOBO. I've seen several tutorials online and conducted some tests myself, and I'm quite happy with the processor reaching between 3.0 and 3.7ghz. My RAM was enabled on the board, which allowed me to reach 2133Mhz up to 3200Mhz. The issue is that none of the guides seem to address the power consumption details. When I turn on the OC in the BIOS, AMD Cool n' Quiet shuts off. It works when the CPU voltage is set to a fixed value, but not when it's set to "Auto." Some forums mentioned that using "Auto" might cause the processor to freeze during OC and force a soft-lock. One person suggested updating the AMD chipset for the Ryzen balanced power plan, but another warned that doing so could be risky if you're only overclocking slightly. I also noticed that with Cool n' Quiet on, the power usage drops by about 8-10 watts in idle and full load. There seems to be a lot of confusion or incomplete information, which makes it hard for me to get a solid assessment, so I thought I’d ask this question myself.
TL;DR
Overclocking a Ryzen 7 1700 on an MSI X470 is it safe to maintain a steady 1.3v, fluctuating slightly to around 1.275 as shown by CPUID HWMonitor at idle? Or is there something I need to adjust to prevent overheating? Temperatures reached 57°C during a Prime95 Blend test after about ten minutes. They started to rise afterward, but I won’t push the system to its limits with this machine.
1.3v performs well at 3.7GHz with temperatures below 65°C. AMD suggests 1.425v and 72°C as safe thresholds.
