Help with 7900XTX assembly process
Hi everyone,
I’ve switched from an Intel and NVIDIA setup to an all-AMD configuration, avoiding any parts from my previous build that lasted ten years. After some adjustments, I’m experiencing serious stuttering in demanding games, especially when the GPU and CPU are heavily utilized. The frame rate drops noticeably, often lasting several seconds before recovering. My system’s power usage is unusually low, with GPU and CPU utilization dropping to nearly zero. In HWINFO, the GPU’s TGP and TBP decrease to about 80 watts each, then quickly return to around 250-350 watts. I’m thinking a power-related issue might be the cause, but here are my current specs:
GPU temps remain under 70°C, averaging 67°C.
CPU temps stay below 60°C, averaging 54°C.
Power supply: Corsair RM850e
Motherboard: MSI Mag Z870 Tomahawk
CPU: AMD 9800X3D
GPU: XFX 7900XTX
RAM: Corsair Vengeance 2x16GB
NVME1 (c: drive): Sabrant 1TB
NVME2 (games drive): Crucial 1TB
Welcome to the forums, newcomer!
What BIOS version do you have installed for your motherboard? Talking about motherboards...and processors;
Mobo: MSI Mag Z870 Tomahawk
CPU: AMD 9800X3D
How did you manage to fit an AMD processor into an Intel socket?
RAM: Corsair Vengeance 2x16gb
Do you have a link to the RAM kit you used?
NVME1 (c: drive): Sabrant 1tb
NVME2 (games drive): Crucial 1tb.
Did you install the operating system with all drives removed except the one you wanted to use, installing it offline?
How are you keeping the processor cool? What is your case model? Any details about fan numbers or orientation?
I’m experiencing serious stuttering problems during intense gaming sessions that heavily utilize both GPU and CPU.
Which games are putting the most strain on this system?
BIOS v1.A24.
X870 is AM5.

EXPO is active.
NVME: No, OS was installed on its primary drive with all drives present. OS was set up via USB.
CPU cooler is a Thermalright Phantom Spirit 120 EVO. The case uses a Corsair 4000D. Fans were swapped with Artic P12 Max units, featuring three intakes at the front and one exhaust at the back.
The game I’m experiencing problems with is Train Sim World 5, though BeamNG and Microsoft Flight Sim also have similar issues. FPS titles like R6, COD6, and CSGO behave similarly but only briefly, which is manageable; it wasn’t obvious how severe the problem was until now.
I plan to swap the PSU for a Corsair 1000x to determine if that’s the cause, as I’m still within Amazon’s return window.
The PSU is unlikely to be the problem. Are the drives you're using brand new? Did you install all necessary drivers for the motherboard and other devices? Have you ruled out software as a cause by running a clean boot? Do you experience performance problems only during synthetic tests or also in games?
Yes, all drives are brand new. Each driver was set up and updated through their respective manufacturer sites, not via Windows Update. I should note that system drive and games drive activity stays at 0% during these drops. It's unclear if this resolves the issue. A clean boot was performed this morning and produced the same symptoms.
The drives were the issue. I returned them to amazon, and ordered 2 WD sn850x drives from SCAN and it has almost no stuttering at all now. Thank you for your help
