I’m researching how to assemble a new PC with the 5800X in a Gigabyte B550 Vision D-P. The backup options are the Asus ROG Strix B550-XE Gaming WIFI and the Gigabyte Aorus B550 Master or Pro V2. I play games but also host several virtual machines at once, which demands many cores and ample RAM. My current setup uses 12GB, and I think 16GB would be just sufficient. However, I’m often unsure what’s best since recommendations vary. Some suggest a 3600MHz clock speed is ideal, while others argue tighter timings matter more. There are differing views on whether 3600MHz suits 16GB RAM or if 3200MHz with tighter timings is preferable. Some believe two DIMMs reduce stress, while others claim four DIMMs boost performance. Start with the basics, if you want the full capacity, ask for it. A speed of 3600 is a solid choice because it aligns with the CPU's internal bus, offering improved performance along that path. It also provides more bandwidth than 3200. When considering latency, think in terms of time rather than cycles, which is how RAM is typically described. A faster RAM can still have slower timing even if it has lower latency. For my own scenarios, latency takes a back seat to the advertised speed, and having several ranks is more valuable than quantity. The number of modules doesn't matter much; loading happens at ranks. I'd prefer more ranks as an added benefit. I’d aim for at least two ranks per channel. A module can be single or dual rank. You can place one or two modules per channel. This affects your overall capacity too. Using 4x8GB modules gives you 32GB and ensures two ranks per channel. Two 16GB modules are less certain—newer ones seem to be single rank, while older ones were dual. About five years ago, some 8GB modules were also dual rank, but they're no longer common. The type of chip matters only if you're an overclocker, and even then, I’d caution against it. Generally, RAM speed compatibility is still far from perfect.
