Help in choosing between Core Ultra and 13th gen Core i series, plus the right Windows laptop model.
Hello, first-time poster but experienced reader.
Summary: Seeking advice on laptop choice between Intel Core Ultra and standard Core i7/i9 H models. Need guidance on which suits my needs best, especially for productivity tasks like Office, SaaS/web apps, light Python/Pytorch/keras coding, occasional Kali Linux use, cybersecurity-focused VMs (multiple VMs preferred), movie/youtube watching, generative AI/LLMs, and absolutely no gaming.
I have a few specifics:
- My top pick is the 2023 Dell XPS 15", which offers the 13th gen Core i7 or i9 i9-13900H. I’ve heard the i9 tends to get hot, so I’m considering the Core Ultra for better cooling and future-proofing in AI work.
- My original plan was a Dell XPS 14" or 16" with a Core Ultra 9 or 7, but function keys and an escape key are missing—those are dealbreakers.
- I also looked at the HP Spectre x360; the keyboard feels great, but it only supports up to 32GB RAM and there are reports of hinge issues. I’ve never owned an HP.
I’m unsure if the Core Ultra will really protect me against future tech changes for my current use cases.
Could you help me decide?
Thanks for your time.

I don't have a current budget or location details. I also don't plan to travel frequently with my laptop.
